Qtown man may have faked death

Queenstown police are investigating the possibility a local man could have faked his death.

Matthew Hamill was last seen on October 29, 2008. The apparently happily married 60-year-old, who was a manager at Millbrook Resort, bought weed killer from a Queenstown store before his car was found at the nearby Roaring Meg power station lookout, the Herald on Sunday reported.

A suicide note was also found.

But his body had never been found -- something police found odd.

"There are thousands of tourists through the area each year," Detective Sergeant Grahme Bartlett told the newspaper.

"There was no indication of depression. We cannot rule anything out."

Mr Hamill's bank account had not been touched.

Anyone with information about Mr Hamill, who has a black and green turtle on his right shoulder, should contact Queenstown police.

Mr Hamill's family did not want to comment.
