Hundreds of primary school pupils from Queenstown, Wanaka, Arrowtown, Glenorchy, and Hawea spent yesterday competing against their Central Otago counterparts in Alexandra.

The Central Otago Primary School Athletic Sports, held at Molyneux Park, comprised more than 400 pupils from schools throughout the Central Otago and Queenstown Lakes districts.

Schools represented in the day-long competition included Arrowtown, Glenorchy, Hawea Flat, Mt Aspiring, Queenstown, Southern Lakes Christian, Wanaka, and Holy Family primary schools.

Wakatipu High School pupils also entered the competition, which was believed to be in its 50th year.

Organiser Mick Enright, of Alexandra's Terrace Primary School, said the competition had been held each year since at least 1958, when the event was first recorded.

"It may have been going longer than that, but for all we know this is the 50th anniversary of it," he said.

Mr Enright said one record had been held for 50 years.

It was in the girls 13 and over long jump, 4.72m set by M.

Truesdale, of Manuherikia, in 1958.

Fine, sunny weather made for a perfect day of sporting competition, which began about 9.30am and finished about 3pm.

Each competitor was awarded a certificate after their efforts on the track and in the field.
