Wanaka Community Board chairwoman Rachel Brown says she has ''alerted'' Queenstown Lakes District Council chief executive Adam Feeley to the need for progress in securing public access to Meads Rd, beside Lake Hawea.
Ms Brown told Wednesday's board meeting that with summer approaching there was likely to be growing pressure from the public to use the road, which runs through Hunter Valley Station to the popular Kidds Bush campsite.
Public use of the road has been the subject of a long-running controversy involving the council and station leaseholders Taff and Penny Cochrane.
The road was closed earlier this year by the Cochranes.
Ms Brown said council solicitor Michael Walker had been ''tasked'' with securing public access, using the Public Works Act.
She was expecting Mr Walker to provide the council with a timeline, but the approaching holiday period was a ''reality check'' for council staff.
