About 25 people attended a public workshop to discuss options for the Wanaka Sports Facility site on Wednesday night.
The Queenstown Lakes District Council voted in March to locate the $10 million stadium and associated facilities at a "greenfields" site in Willowridge Development Ltd's proposed Three Parks subdivision.
A steering group for the sports facility was established at a council meeting last month and consultation with potential user groups has been under way this week in Wanaka.
This week's workshop was facilitated by Queenstown Lakes District Council project manager Ken Gousmett and Nelson man David Allan, of sport and recreation facility planning organisation Global Leisure Group.
While most workshop participants represented specific sporting codes, Mr Allan asked everyone to "take your organisational hats off and be here as individual residents", and to think up to 50 years ahead in terms of the types of groups who might use the facilities.
Those attending were asked for input on what indoor and outdoor facilities should feature at the sports hub and what was needed to support the activities catered for.
Ideas included a snowsports centre of excellence, multisport training facilities such as a velodrome, areas for badminton, rollerblading and beach volleyball, an athletics track and floodlit turfs.
An administrative pavilion, outdoor power hubs, cafe, extensive storage capacity and a convention centre catering for up to 500 people were also suggested.
Mr Allan said one of the "major tensions" around developing new sporting facilities was whether they should be multipurpose venues or used exclusively for sport.
Willowridge director Allan Dippie attended the workshop and said that with sufficient planning for the sports facility, an "outstanding result" was achievable.
The first phase of consultation will be completed next week and the council will develop a proposal before more consultation in October, timed to ensure the project is fully funded in the 2012 10-year-plan.
