James Bond actor Daniel Craig and his Oscar-winning wife, Rachel Weisz, have been spotted in Queenstown.

Old Man Rock Cafe & Bar acting manager Julia Cleaver said she was tipped off by friends that the couple were shopping in Queenstown Mall clothing store Global Culture at 2pm yesterday.

Bond fan Ms Cleaver (23), from Washington state in the United States, and her colleagues planned to ask Craig for a picture when he walked out, but lost their nerve when he emerged - dressed in jeans, a sweatshirt and beanie - holding hands with Weisz.

‘‘They looked at us and then walked away towards the water.''

Seeing Craig was ‘‘pretty cool'', she said, adding: ‘‘I don't really see celebrities too often.''

Global Culture shop assistant Yoko Sakata wondered why the shop was suddenly busy at that time and got wide-eyed when told Craig and Weisz had stopped by.

''Maybe if it was quiet, I would have recognised him.''

Weisz has been in Dunedin filming The Light Between Oceans.

Our journalists are your neighbours

We are the South's eyes and ears in crucial council meetings, at court hearings, on the sidelines of sporting events and on the frontline of breaking news.

As our region faces uncharted waters in the wake of a global pandemic, Otago Daily Times continues to bring you local stories that matter.

We employ local journalists and photographers to tell your stories, as other outlets cut local coverage in favour of stories told out of Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch.
