Marching on the spot while waiting for her baking to rise has helped Wanaka Medical Centre nurse Stephanie Still and her colleagues walk away with a health activity award.

The centre was named Otago's most active medical practice after it won Sport Otago's region-wide Active Practice Step Challenge.

In March, 30 teams from 20 medical practices tried to accumulate as many steps and "step equivalents" as possible by allocating a pedometer to one team member each day.

Sport Otago co-ordinator Monique Wright said the Wanaka Medical Centre team trained, ran, walked, and baked their way to victory.

Ms Still said she did lots of baking wearing a pedometer.

The four team members walked an average of 21km a day, and clocked up a total of about 630km.

The Maori Hill Clinic was second and Dunedin Urgent Doctors third.
