Three large pine trees near the Frankton Marina will be removed next week because of the risk they pose to neighbouring houses and users of the Frankton track.
Queenstown Lakes District Council parks manager Gordon Bailey said the removal was expected to take a week, beginning on Monday.
"They [contractors] will have to dismantle them because they are pretty tall, and [the] council has some in-ground services in the area ... That's why it's taking that long," Mr Bailey said.
A temporary Frankton Track detour would be put in place but there could be delays while the lakeside trees on the Queenstown side of the marina are cleared.
Mr Bailey said the removal had been "on the cards for some years".
"Due to their age, size, health and stability they have been deemed a risk and a danger to track users, particularly in windy conditions."
