Installation of welcome signs on the outskirts of Wanaka has begun. Workmen have started fitting steelwork and placing stone for new signs funded by Wanaka Lions Club, Rotary Club of Wanaka, Wanaka Residents Association and the Queenstown Lakes District Council (QLDC).

Work on the signs, located on State Highway 6 near Puzzling World and Oakridge Resort in Cardrona Valley Rd, is expected to be completed by the end of the week, depending on weather.

Queenstown Lakes Deputy Mayor Lyal Cocks said the signs signified the entrance to Wanaka, and were located on town boundaries to allow for expansion of developments.

''We don't want to be moving them in 12 months' time,'' he said.

The finished signs will feature steelwork with the Wanaka skyline, a kea, and a schist stone border on two sides.

The design was a collaboration between the Lions club, Rotary, the residents association and the Wanaka Community Board, with support from the QLDC.
