Police in Queenstown  carried out a scene examination in the grounds of a church in the resort’s CBD yesterday.

Staff were photographed examining an area outside St Peter’s Church hall lounge — the church and adjoining buildings are directly opposite the Queenstown Police Station, on the corner of Church and Camp Sts.

A police media spokeswoman said  police were investigating "an incident" which occurred late on Wednesday night or early Thursday morning and the church site was "an area of interest". No further details were yet available.

Senior Sergeant Paula Enoka said yesterday  police were hoping to identify a man understood to have been in the CBD between midnight and 2am on Thursday to help with inquiries into an incident.

The bearded man, wearing  a grey singlet and jeans, had tattoos on his left arm.

Police said he might have an Irish accent and had been "frequenting nightclubs" in the resort during a week-long stay.

"If this is you, you know who he is, or where he may be staying, please contact Queenstown police."
