
That includes a breathing apparatus tank to ensure he is fully suited up when he tackles Saturday’s Queenstown half marathon.
The 52-year-old, who also dressed up for last year’s Dunedin half, is also raising money for Leukemia & Blood Cancer NZ, the cause supported by Auckland’s Firefighter Sky Tower Challenge which he regularly competes in — the cause is also personal with his sister battling leukemia.
Harris says his best half marathon time without his gear is 2 hours 2 minutes, but with gear it’s 3hr 7min — he’d love to break three hours.
‘‘I go at a very, very slow pace, just a little bit quicker than walking.
‘‘It’s a little bit hard on my shoulders, but at the end of the day it’s an easier task than battling cancer.’’
Harris says he’s always buoyed by the crowd, especially from Frank-ton Beach.
‘‘From The Bathhouse all the way to the finish-line you’re almost bloody floating because there’s just so many people cheering everyone along.’’
