More than 2000 people went looking for bargains at the Wakatipu Ski Club’s annual fundraising sale yesterday.

Organiser and club patron Peter Devine said more than 3000 items were offered at the sale, which was held at the Queenstown Events Centre.

A greater proportion of the items — about 60% — had been provided by the public this year than in previous years, Mr Devine said.

The  rest had been provided by ski shops and skifields.

He had been helping run the sale since 2001, but it had been going since the early 1980s.

About 120 volunteers had assisted him, some of whom were ski area workers who had just arrived in town and wanted to get their gear sorted for the coming season.

"That’s a big change from previous years — we haven’t seen that before."

Volunteers were rewarded with first dibs at buying gear.

The Remarkables ski area opens on Saturday, June 9, while Coronet Peak and Cardrona ski areas open a week later.
