Eighty cheerful curlers took to the ice at the Southern Hemisphere Proving Ground, on the Pisa Range near Cardrona, yesterday for the second Curling at Altitude tournament.

Cardrona Curling Club secretary Roger Gardiner, hosting the event, said the ice was excellent and curlers were so busy delivering their stones or sweeping the ice they barely noticed the stiff breeze.

Mr Gardiner believed the large area of ice available for play might mean more teams could be invited next year.

The ice rink at the proving ground is prepared each year for tyre companies wanting to test their products.
