Council offices to remain closed for week

The Queenstown Lakes District Council’s main office building will remain closed this  week as the clean-up from a major diesel leak continues.

The Gorge Rd building, which also houses the resort’s public library, was closed to the public and staff last  Monday morning after the spill was noticed when workers arrived.

Queenstown Lakes District Council chief executive Mike Theelen said it would reopen next Monday as the clean-up and repairs continued.

Up to 100 litres of diesel overflowed from a rooftop holding tank for a heating, ventilation and air conditioning system.

It leaked through the ceiling, soaking carpets and walls and damaging some electrical wiring and lighting fixtures.

"While this disruption has not been ideal for the community, or for our Gorge Rd staff, we have decided that while the office is vacant, to take the opportunity to complete the refresh which was already planned for this building," Mr Theelen said.

The refresh would include new paint, carpets, and extra workstations for staff.

More than 60 staff normally based there are working from other council offices in the meantime.

The library was reopened on Wednesday.

Mr Theelen said diesel had not leaked into the library, but it had been closed to allow a thorough inspection and tests of equipment to ensure it was safe for staff and the public.
