Children and their parents had a taste of a United States programme which aims to teach children life skills through golf.

On Saturday, during a brilliant spring day, the Frankton Golf Centre hosted golfers of all ages who hit tennis balls at Velcro-covered walls and golf balls near and far.

New Zealand PGA golf professional Jamie McIsaac said "The First Tee" programme taught children the nine core values of honesty, integrity, sportsmanship, respect, confidence, responsibility, perseverance, courtesy and judgement.

The free family fun day was to promote the programme, which also ran in Queenstown schools during term one and will return for term four. It was also offered as an after-school class.
