Howards Dr roundabout rethink

The Howards Dr intersection with the Frankton-Ladies Mile Highway may be signalised instead of becoming a roundabout, NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi (NZTA) says.

The construction of a roundabout at the intersection, which provides access to Lake Hayes Estate and Shotover Country, has been on the plans since it was included in the $250 million Frankton roading upgrade.

However, NZTA regional manager for infrastructure delivery for the central and lower South Island, Sean Walsh, says it’s ‘‘looking into the potential’’ for traffic lights at the intersection instead.

Enabling works at the site started last year and were needed for either option.

The timeframe for completing the new intersection will depend on which layout is finally chosen, Walsh says.

Meanwhile, he confirms the massive upgrade project, which started two years ago, remains on track for completion in mid-2028.

Traffic lights at the intersection of Joe O’Connell Dr and Frankton-Ladies Mile Highway are planned to go live in early 2028, along with all the traffic lights at the nearby BP intersection, he says.
