Karen Dennison, of Amberley, stands by her 1955 Chevrolet Bel Air during Saturday’s Arrowtown Auto Show at Arrowtown School.

A fundraiser for the school and the Arrowtown Volunteer Fire Brigade, the event was preceded by a "Friday Night Cruise" around Arrowtown’s streets, which included a huge number of classic cars, hot rods, modern cars, utes and motorbikes.

Mrs Dennison, who had owned her "dream car" for about seven years, won the "Sponsors Pick" during the cruise.

She had grown up with a love of old cars thanks to her father and said she had always been fascinated by them.

"I love the sound of them, I love driving them, I love the smell of them."

She spotted her "pride and joy" on Trade Me while her husband, a mechanic, was working in Papua New Guinea and subsequently bought it from an Auckland vendor.

While her husband had since installed an electronic fuel injection kit in it and put some "extra bits" on it, apart from that "she’s ridgey didge", Mrs Dennison said.

Primarily attracted by the cruise aspect of the weekend’s event, given she did not normally show the car, Mrs Dennison said she was impressed by the weekend’s show.

"It’s fantastic — we were really, really surprised. It’s a really good turnout.

"They’ve done really well ... I take my hat off to them."
