Both lanes of the new, $22 million, Kawarau Falls Bridge will open on the afternoon of May 10, the NZ Transport Agency says. Work first began on the bridge in January 2016.

The historic bridge was closed to all traffic in January this year — it was being converted to part of the Queenstown Trails network for walkers and off-road cyclists.

However, because of the final construction phase, only one lane of the new bridge had been in use. An official opening will be held next Thursday at 1.30pm.
