Man concussed after 'coward's punch'

A man was taken to hospital with a concussion after what police described as a ''coward's punch'' in Queenstown at the weekend.

Sergeant Simon Matheson, of Queenstown, said two men got into an argument outside Night 'n Day about 2.30am on Sunday.

A 22-year-old man then hit the other man once in the head. The victim fell to the ground and hit his head on the concrete.

He was taken to hospital for assessment, and was found to have a concussion, Sgt Matheson said.

The 22-year-old was charged with injuring with intent to injure, and will appear in the Queenstown District Court on August 5.

Meanwhile, a foreign national charged with drink-driving was caught attempting to leave the country.

Sgt Matheson said a 20-year-old foreign national who had been living in Queenstown was processed for drink-driving after a minor car crash in Ballarat St on Sunday.

He recorded 951mcg, and was charged with drink-driving and driving while forbidden.

The man was to have appeared in the Queenstown District Court on Monday but was instead found by police at Queenstown Airport, where he was boarding a flight to Auckland. He planned to travel on to Singapore.

He was arrested for breach of bail and will appear in court at a future date.
