The boss of Queenstown’s largest privately-owned gym says his new owners’ major spend-up on new equipment and facilities is widening its client base.

Founded by Braden Lee in 2009, Industrial Fitness was taken over in May by local Jiu-Jitsu exponents and instructors Paula and Brent Te Kawa.

They’ve added a dedicated studio which not only hosts Jiu-Jitsu but also yoga, Pilates, yogalates and Pilates sculpt.

"It’s opened us up to a whole new community," says GM Gary Gregory, who’s been with the gym since 2014.

He adds they’ve also equipped the gym with new gear like a Technogym Pure Strength incline press, three squat racks, leg curl, two treadmills, bench press and seated low row, with others on the way.

"We’ve just very strategically responded to requests by members."

The gym now also has a dedicated area for the fitness racing competition, Hyrox, which is considered to be the world’s fastest-growing sport.

Clients, who can check their results with other competitors worldwide, complete eight 1km runs interspersed with eight workout stations.

Gregory has members going to Hyrox competitions in Melbourne and Auckland in December and January.

Other clients compete in world Jiu-Jitsu champs, while pro Muay Thai fighter/coach Diego Beneduzzi and pro boxer/coach Mikey Jenner take fighters to national comps.

That pair are also hosting the local Kia Kaha Tahuna Boxing & Muay Thai Fight Night on December 6.

Gregory says almost all his trainers are contractors, while the gym now also has an independently-owned coffee shop.

Currently the gym has 870-plus members.
