Worksafe will begin an investigation today into an incident near Queenstown yesterday that killed a 63-year-old local man and left a 19-year-old man in a critical condition in Dunedin Hospital.
Emergency services were called to a construction site at the Closeburn Station subdivision about 4pm after the two men were pinned against a retaining wall by a truck.
Senior Sergeant Paula Enoka, of Queenstown, said the dead man's name was expected to be released later today.
A third man, who was also near the retaining wall at the time of the incident, escaped injury.
There was no one in the truck at the time, Snr Sgt Enoka said.
A large crane was used to move the truck and free the injured man, who was flown to Dunedin Hospital in the Otago Regional Rescue Helicopter about 6.20pm. He was listed as being in a stable condition in ICU late last night.
The site was guarded overnight, and the truck remained at the scene, she said.
The Otago Daily Times understands the truck was an SJ Allen Waste Management vehicle.
The incident occurred on one of the 27 properties in the Closeburn Station hillside subdivision, 11km west of Queenstown on the Glenorchy-Queenstown Rd.
