A paraglider has been injured near the Ben Lomond Track in Queenstown.

The pilot had to be rescued by firefighters after crashing into forest near the Skyline gondola about 12.30pm today.

Queenstown Volunteer Fire Brigade chief fire officer Andrew Barry said a crew found the man on the ground a few hundred metres north of the gondola's bottom terminal.

The man, who had an injured leg, was able to use his cellphone to direct rescuers to his location.

Because of the injury and the steepness of the terrain, the man had to be assisted down the hill in places, Mr Barry said.
