The Queenstown Primary School pupil’s been invited to the Freestyle Trampoline World Championships in Barcelona, Spain, in September, and is furiously training and fundraising ahead of it.
The 13-year-old earned his spot at last month’s GTGames at Frankton’s SITE Trampoline — his second home — where he was the only junior so he competed against boys 16 and over.
Still aged 12 at the time, he finished only a point off a podium finish.
In Barcelona, however, he’ll compete against 13- to 15-year-olds.
Max has trampolined since he was 3, when his dad first took him to SITE, then in Glenda Dr.
He’s seriously trained there for the past five years and is part of its development team.
Shane says it’s been "crazy" watching him develop — "the progress has been massive".
He’s put down the ‘Quint Kaboom’ — a quintuple flip while performing a Kaboom — and been double-bounced by four others and almost touched the roof.
Max says freestyle is almost the opposite of normal trampolining where "everything’s just straight and normal".
"You can technically do what you want."
Max also bring his tricks to snowboarding but missed last season after breaking a foot executing flips at SITE.
Shane says they’ve been overwhelmed by support for Max’s trip. He’s being sponsored by Southern Lakes Scaffolds and has surpassed $4000 out of his $4500 Givealittle page target (‘Send Max to Send It in Barcelona’).
Shane’s also asking businesses for raffle prizes.
