A little over a week after snow fell on the mountain, Coronet Peak’s summer season has got off to a steady start.

The Queenstown skifield’s Coronet Express chairlift and gondola started operating on Friday for mountain bikers and sightseers to take advantage of the panoramic views and downhill biking trails.

Ski area manager Nigel Kerr said he was happy with the number of visitors over the first three days, with the Comencal Enduro mountain bike race on Friday and yesterday’s "Santa Paws" event for dogs and their owners helping to encourage people up the mountain.

Some Queenstown Lakes district residents took advantage of half-price rides on the gondola, Mr Kerr said.

"We’re not breaking records, but we’ve seen a consistent flow, right through the weekend."

As well as the base building’s cafe and a bike rental service, there were games and activities for children.

Skifield owner NZSki opened the mountain for a full summer season last year after a 30-year hiatus.

The Coronet Express and other facilities are operating four days a week, Thursday to Sunday, until March 14, except from December 23 to January 10, when it will open daily.
