Public feedback on Frankton master plan now online

A monorail, mosque, military base, more singing and less yoga.

Those are some of the things on a public wish-list that will help to shape a master plan to future-proof Frankton over the next 30 years.

Feedback received by the Queenstown Lakes District Council in the "early insights and ideas'' phase of its $840,000 Frankton master plan was put on its website yesterday.

Although many of the suggestions appear more silly than serious, they will be fed into the next stage of the project, a series of workshops late this month that will set out a vision and key objectives for Frankton.

Queenstown Lakes Mayor Jim Boult said he was pleased with the response, and thanked residents for taking the time to contribute.

The council had received more than 480 pieces of feedback, and had gained useful insights from a public forum held in association with think-tank Shaping Our Future and the Frankton Community Association, he said.

In a council summary of the feedback, the biggest challenges for the area were traffic congestion, airport growth and noise pollution, and commercial development with no clear plan.

Highest on submitters' wish-lists were a well-connected hub with a "community heart'', more opportunities for sport and recreation, and a transport hub with a park-and-ride system.

The contract to complete the master plan and an integrated transport programme business case has been awarded to a team from consultancy firms GHD and Boffa Miskell.
