Hundreds of residents have reported an earthquake in Queenstown tonight.

On the Geonet website, 335 people reported the quake, which struck about 10pm.

A vast majority described it as either weak (208) or light (118), eight believed it was moderate and one described it was extreme.

An Otago Daily Times reporter described the quake as sudden, brief and unusual.

"It was really weird, it was like a big thud.
