It has begun.

Contractors have removed some trees from State Highway 6 on Kawarau Rd, by the Frankton Golf Course, in preparation for major changes on the roading network and surrounds over the next four years.

The trees were removed from the road earlier this week and the work will continue on SH6 Frankton-Ladies Mile Highway on Monday.

Mulch and wood from the felled trees is being put to good use by local charities and organisations — logs from the felled trees will be sold as firewood to raise funds for a local charity.

For every tree removed, two will be planted within the project boundary or in nearby parkland– with a focus on New Zealand natives.

Massive changes are set for the area with a $250 million project to bring a bus hub, more than a dozen traffic lights and new road layouts.

Work is expected to ramp up next year.
