Travellers between Queenstown and Cromwell are being warned to allow for roadworks and delays over the next two months.

Work on State Highway 6, near the Crown Range turnoff, will begin on Tuesday. The road is commonly called the Gibbston Highway.

The NZ Transport Agency's maintenance contract manager, Mark Stewart, says the work is needed for safety reasons.

The work will include tree felling, work in the highway shoulders, rebuilding of the road and resurfacing. It will take place 7am to 5pm weekdays and some Saturdays.

The NZTA says travellers should allow extra time for their journeys during this period.

It is expected to be finished in early March.
