Two community representatives have been appointed to the Otago and Southland district health boards' disability support advisory committee, a year after its inception.

They are Presbyterian Support Southland chief executive Peter Wards, of Invercargill, and Wakatipu Community Mental health team social worker Heather Clay, from Wanaka.

Community representation was widely debated by the committee before it decided to call for applications for four positions last September, two from each province.

Chairman Neville Cook said this week the committee could have appointed up to two representatives from each province, but had decided to appoint one each.

He did not specify how many applications had been received, only saying there were several, all of good quality.

He indicated some had been withdrawn since reports last October that there were seven applicants.

Mr Cook said the committee could bring in people with expertise in certain areas if it felt it was necessary in future.

The two new members had been appointed to complement the skills of existing committee members, rather than to represent any specific group.

Mr Wards has previously worked for New Zealand CCS and the Department of Social Welfare.

He is an Age Concern executive member and has previously served on Southland's former disability support advisory committee.

Ms Clay moved to Otago from Canterbury in 2007 after 20 years with the Canterbury District Health Board, most of those working in community and hospital mental health services.

She is a member of the board of Autism New Zealand and Disabled Snow Sports New Zealand.

The committee advises the boards on issues associated with the the care of the elderly and the disabled.
