The event will begin Zonta Timaru’s 15 Days of Advocacy.
Zonta Timaru advocacy chairwoman Helen Carter said in a statement members were excited to be promoting the car maintenance workshop, which aimed to encourage participants to be confident managing the basic, everyday maintenance of their vehicle.
"We want to give women of all backgrounds, whether young or mature, opportunities to learn basic skills in a friendly, supportive environment. We’re grateful to Mark and the team at South Canterbury Toyota for hosting the event, as well as South Canterbury Road Safety for their support."
South Canterbury Toyota chief executive Mark Patterson said the company was excited to be broadening the knowledge of car maintenance and technology to groups who could sometimes be overlooked, and giving back to the community.
"Widening a driver’s understanding can also improve the enjoyment of car ownership. It’s all very well in this day and age looking on Google to find a user manual, but there’s nothing quite like mucking in and seeing how to in real life. We hope this workshop evening is just the start."
The free course will teach attendees the basics of maintaining a vehicle, such as checking the oil, water and other fluids, checking tyre pressures, changing a tyre, changing wipers and batteries and learning about vehicle safety technologies.
The November 25 event is free, but spaces are limited. To register, phone South Canterbury road safety co-ordinator Michelle Bunt on 027286-5389 or book online at scrs.org.nz/girls-car.
