A Timaru masters athlete has picked up an Australasian age group title in a brutal hybrid sport known as Deadly Dozen.

Held in Auckland earlier this month, Wayne Doyle competed in the 55+ division against 14 other athletes. They came from as far away as Great Britain and Brazil, bringing an international flavour to the event.

The event comprised running a 400m lap around an athletics track 12 times while performing a series of weight lifting exercises, including 50kg carries, 30kg presses and squats between each lap.

Doyle completed the event in just over an hour, which also placed him in the top 100 in the world for his division.

He said it was probably the hardest event he had ever tried.

"I went beyond my threshold and was running on empty by the end.

"It wasn’t a pretty sight."

After having a short break, he planned on training for his next competition later in the year. — Allied Media
