Dean Satherley dominated the field to claim the South Canterbury Centre bowls development singles title and lift the prestigious Peter Leonard Family Trophy.

Satherley, who recently relocated from Nelson after a successful five-year stint with the Tahunanui club, has quickly adapted to the slick greens at his new home club, Kia Toa.

He arrived in the region with a formidable reputation, having previously secured the Nelson Centre junior pairs and the Nelson junior singles titles in consecutive years.

Three years ago, he also clinched the champion of champions power singles in Nelson, alongside a three-year dominance as Tahunanui’s junior singles champion.

While Satherley narrowly missed out on qualifying for the top division, he brought a wealth of high-stakes experience into the division two final.

His opponent, Waimate’s Jason Rhodes, was completely unfazed by Satherley’s pedigree early on.

The opening six ends saw a tense, neck-and-neck battle, with the players locked at 3-3.

However, Satherley then stamped his authority on the match, surging ahead to an 8-3 lead.

Rhodes looked poised to strike back on the next end, holding three shots, but Satherley turned the tide with a clinical draw to reduce the damage to just a single point.

Satherley then delivered a knock-out blow on the following end, executing four incredible shots.

Rhodes attempted to fire twice to clear the head but missed, allowing Satherley to pick up a maximum four shots.

Cruising with confidence, Satherley picked up three successive singles to race to a 15-4 lead, despite some excellent damage-control bowls from Rhodes.

While Rhodes managed to draw a shot on the next end to trail 15–5, Satherley re-asserted his dominance to comfortably wrap up the match 21-7.

Satherley was delighted with the victory and expressed his excitement for the upcoming season with Kia Toa.

Both finalists had earned their spots with impressive semifinal performances; Rhodes put on a stellar display to defeat Kia Toa’s Rana Matenga 21-14, while Satherley notched a clinical 21-13 win over Jared Barker.

Satherley’s arrival is a massive boost for the South Canterbury Centre.

Along with his top-tier playing experience, he is also a qualified New Zealand umpire, making him an invaluable asset to the local bowls community both on and off the green.
