The South Canterbury Drama League’s latest musical offering promises a night of pure escapism and good old-fashioned razzamatazz.

Directed by TJ Ramsay with musical direction by Ella Thomas and choreography by Bronwyn Chittock, Hello, Dolly! is set to open next Thursday.

In a statement, Ramsay said they had gone for a completely fresh look for the production.

"Building production design, set and costuming has been done from the ground up with a creativity we hope audiences will find exciting.

"Production design and costuming have been under way since last year and the hard-working teams are now putting all the ideas together as the whole Playhouse Theatre is incorporated in the vibrant design."

Hello, Dolly! is set in 1890s New York and tells the story of Dolly Levi, a widowed matchmaker who ventures from New York City to Yonkers in order to find a match for her miserly client, "half-a-millionaire" Horace Vandergelder.

As Dolly navigates this situation, she also begins to consider finding a match for herself, setting the stage for a charming and comedic tale filled with romance and laughter.

Audiences can expect to hear all the classic tunes like Put on Your Sunday Clothes, Elegance, When the Parade Passes By and It Takes a Woman.

An experienced local cast is poised to bring the upbeat and comical story to life in a fresh, updated version.

The principal cast includes Suzan Anderson (Freaky Friday) as the meddlesome Dolly, Cameron Lines (Legally Blonde, Catch Me If You Can) as hopeless romantic Cornelius Hackl, Luke Robb (The Addams Family) as the hapless Barnaby Tucker, Georgia Lines (Catch Me If You Can, Freaky Friday) as Mrs Irene Molloy, Macy Shields (Legally Blond) as Minnie Fay and George Hollinsworth (Popcorn) as Horace Vandergelder.

The production runs from July 24 to August 9 at the Playhouse, Timaru and is suitable for all ages.

Tickets can be booked online at the iticket website or in person from the Timaru Information Centre.
