The Waimate District Council retrospectively approved $77,123 spending on its new event centre last week.

The $5.5million Waimate Event Centre officially opened in December last year.

During construction last-minute decisions on timber flooring for its now International Basketball Federation approved basketball courts, at a cost of $60,000, and the addition of the mezzanine floor, costing $17,123, were discussed among some elected members, but did not receive the council's approval.

After an internal investigation the unbudgeted expenditures ``should have been reported to the full council as the expenditure for these items arose'', a council press release issued after the council's February 21 meeting stated.

Council chief executive Stuart Duncan inherited the issue when he took on the role two weeks ago and said this week he would review ``the relevant policies'' at the council and ``future conditions of contract documents''.

``Yes, there are weaknesses in the [council's] policy and the procedures,'' Mr Duncan said.

The report received by council noted no individual was to blame for the identified weaknesses of the current policies.
