Pair trapped at Waitaki River mouth

Police have been called to the rescue of two people trapped by the incoming tide at the Waitaki River mouth this afternoon.

The call for help came in after the pair became stuck on a rocky bar, a police spokeswoman said.

"They walked out when the tide was low and had gotten stuck when the tide was coming in,'' she said.

Late this afternoon Waimate police had arranged for a jet boat to pick them up, and they were not in any danger.

A helicopter was initially dispatched, but stood down as it was not required.
