Roadworks to start

Roadworks due to start soon on State Highway 1 in and around Ashburton may mean delays or detours that road users are advised to plan for.

NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi has advised that from Sunday (February 22), delays of up to 15 minutes can be expected as resurfacing work is scheduled to begin on SH1/Archibald St near Carters Tce in Tinwald, carrying through until Thursday, March 5.

Work is due to take place Sunday-Thursday, 7pm to 5am each day, and road users are asked to stop on demand and there will be a 30kmh speed restriction at the work site.

Road reconstruction work is also scheduled just south of Tinwald, at the Longbeach Rd intersection with SH1, from Tuesday (February 24). SH1 is scheduled to be reduced to a single lane on weekdays through to March 11.

From 7am to 6pm, northbound traffic will be detoured via Winslow Westerfield Rd and Maronan Rd, and southbound traffic will remain on SH1. From 6pm to 7am, the site will be open to both southbound and northbound traffic, operating under temporary traffic lights. At weekends, both lanes are due to be open but under speed restrictions. Delays of up to 15 minutes apply here too.

Both lots of roadworks are weather dependent and may be postponed/rescheduled. If this happens notice will be provided.

An NZTA spokesperson said while the overlap of the two lots of work was not ideal, wet weather so far this summer had affected the roading programme, and it was important to complete the work within the summer maintenance season. People travelling on SH1 should be aware of the potential cumulative delays.
