Timaru has again punched well above its weight in the annual New World Family 2 Family campaign.

Despite many households coming under increased financial pressure from rising fuel and other costs, the four-week campaign ended with 321 bags of groceries donated to Presbyterian Support South Canterbury’s Family Works food bank on Monday — just 10 fewer than last year’s tally, and equating to more than $7000 of foodbank-friendly products.

Shoppers could either select a $20 pre-filled bag or fill their own, shop in-store or online, and even use their New World dollars to purchase groceries for the cause. Nationwide, New World donates $250,000 to foodbanks as part of the appeal.

Presbyterian Support South Canterbury chief executive Carolyn Cooper said the donation came at a good time, with households having to deal with increased heating costs.
