In a statement board chairman Sam Hervey said the decision reflected a deliberate demonstration of how the trust viewed its role in supporting community health.
"We didn’t do this just to get Bidwill some visibility through sponsorship.
"Rather, we saw it as an opportunity to invest in the physical health of our community.
"Regular participation in sport improves cardiovascular health, reduces the risk of chronic diseases such as diabetes and supports healthier ageing.
"At a population level, more active communities place less strain on the health system and enjoy better overall wellbeing."
Mr Hervey said the board considered the growing body of New Zealand evidence linking sport and recreation to improved health outcomes when making its decision.
"Data from Sport New Zealand and the Ministry of Health show that people who are regularly active have lower rates of obesity, better fitness and improved quality of life.
"Importantly, young people who participate in sport are more likely to carry those healthy habits into adulthood."
The $24.2 million redevelopment of Aorangi Stadium promised to deliver a modern, multi-court facility designed to meet the needs of the district for decades to come.
The project was expected to expand opportunities for sport and recreation, attract regional and national events and strengthen Timaru’s position as a hub for community activity.
Mr Hervey said accessible, high-quality facilities were critical to increasing participation.
"If we want people to be more active, we need to provide the spaces that make that possible.
"Facilities such as the Aorangi Stadium create opportunities for people of all ages and abilities to take part in a variety of sports, whether that’s organised competition, social recreation, or simply staying active."
The benefits extended well beyond individual health, he said.
"Stronger participation in sport builds more connected communities, supports young people and contributes to economic activity through events and visitors.
"This is about creating a healthier, more vibrant South Canterbury."
The Bidwill Trust Hospital was proud to support a project that would leave a lasting legacy, he said.
