A Catlins reserve will celebrate 50 years of conservation efforts this September.

The Lenz Reserve was created when in 1963 Dunedin benefactor Ivy Lenz made a bequest allowing Forest & Bird to buy 544ha of a former logging site near Papatowai on the south coast.

The mix of untouched podocarp and regenerating bush straddled the Fleming River, and its early guardians were struck by its potential as a resource for conservation, scientific and educational activities.

Managed by members of the Southland, Dunedin and South Otago branches of Forest & Bird, the reserve - Forest & Bird's largest - has evolved to include trails from a few hundred metres to 4km, and cabins plus an A-frame house providing accommodation for 16.

It was gazetted as a scenic reserve in 1966, and opened officially to the public in 1969.

The combined branches issued an invitation to past and present members, associates, dignitaries and the general public to help them mark its 50th anniversary, on September 21.

Committee member Jim Young, of Owaka, said the anniversary meant those involved could "celebrate achievements".

"Although it's been 50 years, we'll be looking forward as much as back. As a living, breathing place, work continues to explore and conserve the Lenz, and the wider Tautuku area."

The Tautuku Restoration Project was studying biodiversity in the 6600ha Tautuku and Fleming Rivers basin.

The recent discovery of threatened Tautuku forest geckos in the catchment illustrated the importance of the reserve, and of the continued efforts of members in trapping and other projects, he said. Its recently renovated buildings were available to people keen to experience the "magic" of the remote Catlins bush.
