A&P show building on 150 years of history

Time is ticking by for the chance to go down in history at the 150th South Otago A&P show next month.

The celebrations will focus heavily on heritage and a steam traction engine will be a feature.

Livestock and equestrian registrations for the November 25 event close next week and show treasurer Katy Button warned people to get in on time.

''The sort of thing people keep is the show catalogue so your entry has got to be in to make sure you're a part of it.''

As well as heritage and history of the event, there will be an emphasis on heavy horses, as they were the main mode of transport over 100 years ago.

There will also be a ''Fashion in the Shed'' event to highlight the change in clothing over 150 years. Participants are encouraged to dress in period attire.

A special book is being made to document the history of the event and farming in South Otago.

The A&P society also asked for memorabilia to be donated for the event.

The South Otago A&P society was an amalgamation of other societies in the district as population density changed and travelling became easier over time.

Farming had seen a shift in population since the heyday of the agricultural industry, Mrs Button said.

''If you look back over 100 years ago there would have been three or four families on a property and now there is just one family.''

These community events were important and even more so in the ''digital age'', Mrs Button said.

''It is the big day out for South Otago and you do catch up with a lot of people.''

Activities planned for the weekend in November include the car sound-off competition, Show Queen pageant, carnival rides, children's shows, agricultural and equine events.
