Award recognises parents centre

Balclutha Parents Centre has won a national award which recognises the efforts it makes in the community.

Several members attended the national Parents Centre symposium in Auckland last weekend.

They were presented with the Taking it to the People award.

Parents Centre NZ volunteer services manager Joan Hay presented the award and described the Balclutha centre as one that worked hard to take its services to people within its community.

"They have a very caring approach to their services and support their wider membership in any way they can.

This kind of approach is well-recognised and acknowledged by their members," she said.

Members regularly took part in speaking opportunities among other networks in the community and this, Mrs Hay said, ensured the Parents Centre name was to the fore and receiving media coverage.

It was also impressive to see it had established a special group offering activities to schoolchildren.

"This means that they are extending their net wider to cater for those parents who no longer have babies or toddlers."

Social events were also strong, with plenty of chances for parents to interact, and this form of "socialisation" was an important aspect of the centre's work.

The centre has recently celebrated its 20th year, moved to new premises and "take pride in everything they do", Mrs Hay said.

Balclutha Parents Centre president Rosie Robinson was overwhelmed and thrilled with the award.

"It is great to have been recognised for all the volunteer work that our committee do."
