The Balclutha Centennial Pool will reopen next week for the first time since being closed for maintenance in July.

The pool was closed on July 24 for its annual maintenance and cleaning and was expected to be reopened by the end of August.

Clutha District Council service delivery group manager Jules Witt said the maintenance took longer than expected and it would now reopen on Monday, September 5.

It was the first time the pool had been emptied since its upgrade five years ago.

When it  was drained, the condition of the tiles  was discovered to be worse than expected.

Retiling took up to two weeks to complete.

The cost will come out of the pool’s maintenance budget.

Some of the other work completed during the closure included alterations to bulkheads, sealing and grouting.

There was also maintenance work completed on the heating system and filtration plant.

The pool has been  refilled and the water temperature will be raised to 28.5degC over the next few days.

"We’re looking likely to still be on track for next Monday, but if we can open it earlier, we will," Mr Witt said.
