Clutha District Council housing unit tenants have been quick to get permission to have their pets live with them.
The council recently decided tenants would need to formally apply for permission to have pets in the units.
Community services co-ordinator Loesje Morrison told the district assets committee eight applications had been received.
"These small animals have, in all cases, been very good company for our tenants and have not been a nuisance to neighbouring tenants or local residents."
All eight applications have been granted.
Meanwhile, the council has started initial work on the modernisation of its 98 units districtwide.
The council has approved nearly $700,000 of urgent improvements, including the installation of heat pumps and better insulation.
