Clutha Foundation is seeking applicants for its latest funding round, as local groups and individuals continue to benefit from its grants and scholarships.

Founded in 2018, the foundation began disbursing grants in 2020 and tallied nearly $250,000 in support for local good causes earlier this year.

Foundation spokeswoman Jess Weichler said a contestable grant round took place each year, awarding funds to charitable projects based on the wishes of foundation donors and the most pressing needs of local communities.

"The funds support local projects and organisations that enhance the wellbeing of our Clutha communities.

"This year’s funding priority is health and wellbeing, though projects falling under children and youth, education, environment, aged support, art and culture, and recreation and sport will also be considered."

The foundation also ran several scholarship funds, including the Clutha Agricultural Development Board Telford Scholarship.

Its latest recipient was Katie Barker, who was working towards an NZ Certificate in animal technology (rural animal technician).

Miss Barker said she appreciated the scholarship, which would aid her studies.

"Growing up on my family’s farm, I developed a lifelong passion for animals.

"After graduation, I’m looking forward to continuing to research animal health and assisting rural veterinarians in delivering high-quality care in South Otago," she said.

Ms Weichler said, alongside the general fund, several community endowment funds also now existed.

"In 2025, contestable funding is available from the general fund, Milton Bruce Community Fund, Tuapeka Lawrence Community Fund, Owaka & Districts Community Fund, and as specified by individual donors who have established named endowment funds with Clutha Foundation.

"The income from all contributions gifted to Clutha Foundation go right back into local projects in the Clutha district, creating sustainable funding streams that benefit our communities, forever.”

Applications close on August 15, and successful applicants will be announced by November 14.
