Late last year the Clutha Licensing Trust announced a competition to help name their new venue.

South Otago residents put on their thinking caps and submitted a plethora of creative, fun and zany names for the gastro-pub.

The winning name, Arches, was penned by father and daughter duo Dean and Evie Alexander.

Evie, 12, said the name was inspired by the iconic Balclutha Bridge arches.

"My dad and I both thought what is significant to Balclutha and we agreed that the bridge was the most significant. Because the venue was close to the bridge then it hit us — Arches.

"It fit perfectly so we put that name on our very long list," she said.

"We came up with lots of names more English in style, such as the Plucky Chicken and The Farmers Grill.

"The Arches is a good name because it’s synonymous with the bridge nearby, it’s unique to Balclutha and it’s a short and snappy pub name. Everything about it just fit."

She said she wishes Arches every success as it opens.

"We can’t wait to go there and see all the amazing work you’ve done for the whole community.’’

Trust general manager Ross Balloch thought the name was apt.

"We were looking for a name that would inspire the community to make the pub their own and Arches fit perfectly.

"It was chosen from an overwhelming number of entries including Big River Grill, The Molyneux, The Bridge Side Tavern, The Punt, Steamer Tavern, The Drunken Farmer, Captain on Clyde.

"We’d like to thank everyone for their interest and entries into the naming competition. We look forward to seeing you at Arches very soon."
