The Clutha District Council will informally meet Contact Energy for a briefing on consultation over future hydro-electricity development on the Clutha River.

No date has yet been set but both parties are working towards getting together at the end of July so the power company can brief councillors and staff.

Council planning and environment manager Murray Brass said the workshop would give Contact a chance to update it on the proposal to review proposed dams at Queensberry, Luggate, Beaumont and Tuapeka Mouth, while giving councillors the opportunity to ask questions.

"I would imagine it will be an informal update and a bit of a Q and A (question and answer) session."

Contact is expected to identity a preferred development option next year.
