Cycling NZ with health message

Rick Martin will cycle the length of New Zealand with a message for all men along the way.

His Brotherhood - Ride For Your Life campaign will cover 2200km in 26 days, starting on November 13.

The rationale behind the effort is to encourage Kiwi men to have annual wellness check-ups.

Mr Martin will visit Balclutha on November 14 and arrive in Dunedin the next day as he tackles the first leg of his nationwide ride.

The aim is simple - to get men to regularly get health checks so any health problems can be detected early.

It is thought the annual death rate from prostate cancer alone could be cut by 40% - 250 lives - through the simple process of annual checks.

"There is absolutely no reason why the lives of so many New Zealand men are lost when a simple check-up may make all the difference.

Early detection is the key, and if I can help encourage more men to be checked and thereby decrease these statistics, it will all be worthwhile," he said.

Mr Martin's wife, Tania, will be his main support person during the ride, which will finish at Cape Reinga on December 8.
