District council ahead of budget by $1.1 million

A third-quarter $3.03 million surplus has been reported by the Clutha District Council, about $1.1 million ahead of budget for the 2007/08 financial year.

The council was told this week the biggest variations were an extra $1.1 million from the Department of Corrections.

It also received an extra $115,942 from building consent income.

Investments: Clutha District Council investment funds earned more than $127,000 in April, figures show. The fixed-interest fund returned $109,259, while the cash fund earned a further $18,378 for the month. In total, both funds hold just over $21 million.

Visitors: Nearly 6000 visitors called in to the Clutha Information Centre in April, figures show. Of the 5894 who walked through the door, 2182 were international guests, while 3712 lived in New Zealand.

Consent: The council will push ahead with a resource consent application to improve sewage treatment operations in Lawrence. Progress is also being made on planned upgrades at Tokoiti and Benhar.

Public excluded: The district council met as a committee of the whole behind closed doors to debate four items which included enforcement matters, an unauthorised water charge and an update on the Mahinerangi wind farm proposal.

Resignation: Clutha District Council environmental health officer Bob Draper has tendered his resignation and will leave at the end of June. Regulatory services committee chairman Bruce Vollweiler moved a formal letter of appreciation be sent to Mr Draper.
