District plan review hearing next week

Clutha District Council staff, working on a review of the district plan, will get their first formal direction from the public on what should be tweaked, at a hearing this month.

The council, which consulted informally with interested parties for about a year, received 40 submissions on its "Issues and Options" document which outlined what it saw as the key items for review.

Key issues identified included infrastructure, noise provisions, industrial development on the Tokomairiro plain, climate change, coastal protection and the recognition of historic heritage.

Planning and environment manager Murray Brass said the next step was a hearing so submitters could discuss their concerns.

The hearing would be held on Monday, March 9.

The next day would be available as well, should extra time be needed.

Decisions from that hearing will determine the exact direction the revised plan takes but not confirm its new or altered contents, Mr Brass said.

Afterwards, staff will start preparing formal changes, a process that involves ongoing consultation.

Updated changes would be taken to council as they were developed, he said.
