Successful efforts by a South Otago farming couple, Wilson (''Wick'') and Angela Wylie, to improve water quality have also won them the Otago Regional Council Water Quality Management Award.

The couple, who run a 270ha sheep and beef property, Glenelgin, at Tahatika, gained the award at the recent Otago Ballance Farm Environment Awards (BFEA) in Wanaka.

They also gained the $1000 Beef and Lamb NZ Livestock award, and were among several winners recognised for their contributions to environmental stewardship.

Mrs Wylie was ''pretty stoked'' at gaining the ORC award, and said the $1000 accompanying it would also be spent on undertaking more planting at their property.

Mr Wylie was pleased his wife was gaining recognition for her initiative in growing many more native plants, over the past six years.

These native species plantings would provide multiple benefits on the property, including creating wind breaks and areas of shade for farm livestock.

ORC officials said the ORC award recognised many factors, including the couple's commitment to enhancing water quality; fencing almost all of their Owaka River boundaries and some tributaries; and extensive riparian planting, as well as collaboration with the University of Otago and the Working Waters Trust for riparian planting advice.

Award judges said the Wylies were a ''motivated'' couple, running an ''efficient, and well-executed sustainable operation''.

ORC director stakeholder engagement Jane Leahy said it was ''great to see'' landholders passionate about the environment.
