Owaka artist Gordon Thompson’s latest exhibition is at Balclutha’s new Colour + Light Gallery throughout September.

Intenature — Art in Action, brings together art, environment and community in an experimental, practical and personal way.

Mr Thompson held an official opening on September 7, where he showed visitors how he made the paper, paint and brushes used in his work from scratch, an approach which reflecting his philosophy of working in harmony with nature.

The exhibition also features an innovative dual payment system where the buyer may purchase an artwork with a commitment to volunteer hours to environmental restoration, as well as with money.

This promotes Mr Thompson’s wider initiative, the Intenature Challenge, which encourages people to take up small but meaningful ecological action.

"Intenature is a call to re-imagine how creativity can protect the planet, and an invitation for everyone to take part," Mr Thompson said.

"It’s art that tells a story about environmental sustainability, that was created 100% sustainably, changing hands in a way that encourages an expanding number of people to commit to small, personal goals of sustainability.

"It could be picking a natural area to keep litter free, joining a group to plant habitat or just choosing products with less disposable packaging ... Just one action, small and manageable, but if everybody chooses one the benefits will quickly be noticed."

The exhibition is the second hosted by the Colour + Light Gallery, which was opened earlier this year by Belinda Mason to "provide a dedicated space for showcasing the work of Clutha’s talented artists".

Mr Thompson, who founded the local Earthlore ecology centre, has a background in screen printing and graphic design and hopes the fusion of his lifelong passions for art and the environment will inspire sustainable practices across the Clutha District and beyond.
